To culminate their Renaissance History Block, 7th Grade students chose an artist and tried to render one of their works. Then, they made their own plaster and pigments to create their candle frescoes.
Students in the 7th-grade completed their Great Masters’ Project to culminate the Renaissance History Block. They studied the main artists from the period including, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, and Durer. Students chose an artist and tried to render one of their works.
The class also had the opportunity to create frescoes in the style of the Renaissance artists. They used plaster from the Quick Lime they made last fall when they studied the Lime Cycle in Chemistry. They let the plaster age about 6 months, mixed it with powdered pigments and Lime Water, and painted directly onto the wet plaster to create the candle paintings.
